Happy times are here again

A bit of colour at last! That handsome moth the Herald flew in last night - and was keen to fly off this morning. Unlike most of the snoozing residents of the trap, it was keen to wander around and then sat in the early sunshine, warming its wings before taking off and jinking away to safety in a hawthorn hedge. Considerately, it gave me time for the photo above before taking its leave.

The other new arrival for the year was a Muslin moth, a species which is deceptively grey at first glance but has a wonderfully shaggy head, fine antennae and striking yellow knee-breeches. The other guests were ones which have been here before - lots of Hebrew Characters, Common Quakers and the like, plus a trio of Brindled Beauties, one of which had gone to sleep pretending to be a butterfly with its wings raised, rather than swept back in the usual manner. Is there a reason for this? If anyone has an answer or opinion, I'd be very interested to hear it.

Here's a handsome March Moth too, left, more colourful than the usual, run-of-the-mill versions. But then my attention turned to butterflies. We are enjoying absolutely beautiful weather and, I'm glad to say, Orange Tips have made their appearance to join the Brimstones, Peacocks and Small Tortoiseshells which are abundantly around.

Here below are a male - with the orange - and female - without, pausing for a welcome moment for the photographer in their usual restless circlings of the garden and next door properties.  Then the male and female separately What a beautiful creature!
